Is every ABS injection grade interchangeable?
No. Flow, impact, heat, colour and processing behaviour vary by grade. Compare the exact manufacturer data and validate the material in the intended part.

STOPWOO / BUYER KNOWLEDGE
ABS grade selection should begin with the moulded part and service conditions, not a generic “injection grade” label. Buyers should compare the exact manufacturer grade, test methods, impact and flow data, appearance requirements and processing guidance, then confirm the current TDS and relevant batch COA.
Describe the part, wall thickness, appearance, mechanical loads, service temperature and exposure to sunlight or chemicals. A housing, trim component and general-purpose moulded article may need different property balances.
If replacing an existing resin, provide the current grade, process conditions and the reason for considering a substitute. This gives the supplier a practical basis for screening alternatives.
Review melt-flow data, impact strength, tensile and flexural properties, heat-related data, colour and surface appearance where relevant. Confirm specimen thickness, conditioning, test temperature and method before comparing values.
ISO 180 describes a method for determining Izod impact strength, ISO 527 covers tensile properties, and ISO 1133-1 covers MFR and MVR under specified temperature and load conditions. The current manufacturer TDS should identify the methods used for the grade.
Weatherability, plating compatibility, flame performance and other special characteristics must be supported by documents for the exact grade. Do not assume that every ABS grade has the same properties or certification.
For critical parts, request processing guidance and validate the candidate material in a controlled moulding trial. A datasheet comparison alone cannot guarantee performance in a particular mould or production line.
Include the manufacturer preference, exact grade if known, application, process, key performance targets, colour, quantity and destination. State whether equivalent alternatives may be considered.
Ask for the current grade-specific TDS and the relevant batch COA where available. Confirm packaging, supply availability, price basis and quotation validity in writing.
No. Flow, impact, heat, colour and processing behaviour vary by grade. Compare the exact manufacturer data and validate the material in the intended part.
Only when the test method, specimen thickness, conditioning and test temperature are equivalent.
No. Flame performance and certification apply to specific grades and test conditions. Request the current documentation for the exact grade.
