Polycarbonate (PC) Resin: Grade and Application Selection

Polycarbonate (PC) is an engineering thermoplastic used in applications where impact behaviour, transparency or heat-related performance may matter. Not every PC grade has the same optical, mechanical, processing or regulatory characteristics. Buyers should identify the exact grade and compare its TDS against the part requirements, including test conditions, colour, UV exposure and any flame or compliance specification.

1. Define the application and required appearance

PC may be considered for transparent parts, electrical and electronic components, equipment housings and other engineered applications. The correct grade depends on whether the part needs transparency, colour control, impact performance, dimensional stability or other features.

State whether the part is exposed to sunlight, elevated temperature, chemicals, repeated loading or impact. These conditions affect which grade data should be reviewed.

2. Compare the exact grade data

Review MFR/MVR, impact, tensile and flexural properties, heat-related data, colour and optical information where relevant. Confirm the test method, specimen preparation and conditioning for each reported value.

UV-stabilized, flame-retardant, optical and other specialty grades must be identified by their exact manufacturer grade and supporting documentation. Do not infer these properties from the PC family name.

3. Confirm processing and handling

Ask the supplier for the current processing recommendations and material-handling guidance for the exact grade. Drying, processing temperature and moulding conditions should follow the manufacturer instructions.

For optical or safety-sensitive parts, the material selection should be reviewed with the part designer and validated in the intended process. A general material description is not a substitute for part qualification.

4. Verify documents and export requirements

Request the current TDS, relevant batch COA and SDS where applicable. If the application requires a flame rating, food-contact status or another regulatory claim, request evidence for the exact grade and intended destination.

Confirm manufacturer, origin, availability, packaging, quantity, destination and quotation validity in writing before placing an order.

Frequently asked questions

Are all PC grades transparent?

No. PC is available in different formulations and colours. Confirm the exact grade and optical data if transparency is required.

Can PC flame-retardant performance be assumed?

No. Flame performance is grade-specific and must be supported by current documentation for the exact material and applicable test or classification.

What should be checked before substituting one PC grade for another?

Compare exact grade data, processing recommendations, colour, impact and heat requirements, and validate the substitute in the intended part and process.
