PET Resin: Bottle, Fiber and Film Grade Buyer Guide

PET is supplied in grades for different conversion routes, including bottle, fibre, film and sheet applications. These grades should not be treated as interchangeable. Buyers should confirm the intended process and compare the exact grade’s intrinsic viscosity, moisture, colour and other application-specific data using current manufacturer documents and batch records.

1. Identify the PET application first

Bottle-grade, fibre-grade and film or sheet-grade PET are designed around different processing and end-use requirements. A buyer should state the intended conversion process and product before asking for a quotation.

Do not use a generic PET description as a substitute for the exact grade designation and manufacturer specification.

2. Review the relevant grade indicators

Depending on the application, buyers may need to review intrinsic viscosity, moisture, colour, acetaldehyde, particle or chip quality and other grade-specific parameters. The required values and methods should be taken from the current manufacturer TDS and relevant COA.

Processing and drying requirements should follow the supplier’s instructions for the exact grade and equipment.

3. Treat food-contact claims as a separate compliance check

A PET material name or bottle-grade label does not by itself prove food-contact suitability. Confirm the exact grade, manufacturing process, intended use, destination market and applicable regulatory documentation.

If recycled content is involved, request traceability and recycled-content evidence that matches the material and shipment. Do not assume that all recycled PET is suitable for food-contact use.

4. Confirm batch and shipment information

Request the current TDS and the COA for the actual production batch where available. Confirm packaging, moisture protection, quantity, loading, origin, availability and delivery terms.

For export orders, agree the required documents and commercial basis in writing. Domestic reference prices are not binding export quotations.

Frequently asked questions

Can bottle-grade PET be used for every PET application?

No. PET grades are designed for different processes and end uses. Confirm the exact grade against the intended conversion route.

Does “food grade” in a product title prove compliance?

No. Request the exact grade and process documentation and verify the applicable requirements in the destination market.

What should be checked for recycled PET?

Check source and traceability, recycled-content evidence, batch consistency, contamination controls, relevant test data and the intended regulatory status.

Technical references

Standards describe test methods. They do not certify a specific resin grade or prove suitability for a particular end use.
