POM (Acetal) Resin: Grade Selection and Procurement Checks

POM, also known as acetal or polyoxymethylene, is an engineering thermoplastic used in precision components such as gears, bushings and fittings. Buyers should distinguish the exact POM grade and polymer type, then compare mechanical, thermal, friction and wear information under relevant test conditions. Suitability depends on component design, loads, environment and the manufacturer’s grade-specific data.

1. Identify the POM type and exact grade

POM is commonly supplied as homopolymer or copolymer grades. The choice should be based on the component design, processing needs, service conditions and grade-specific property data rather than a generic POM label.

Record the full manufacturer name and grade code. Similar trade names may represent different formulations or performance targets.

2. Describe the component and operating conditions

For gears, bushings, zippers, fittings and other moving or precision parts, buyers should describe loads, speed, friction, wear, dimensional tolerances, temperature, moisture and chemical exposure where relevant.

A material datasheet cannot predict every component’s service life. Critical applications may require design review, test specimens or validation in the actual component.

3. Request relevant technical evidence

Review flow data, tensile and impact properties, stiffness, thermal data and any available friction or wear test results relevant to the part. Confirm the method, specimen and test conditions for each value.

If a supplier claims a special low-wear, low-friction or chemical-resistance performance, ask for the supporting grade documentation and test basis.

4. Confirm supply and documents

Ask for the current TDS, relevant batch COA and SDS where applicable. Confirm packaging, quantity, storage, availability, origin and delivery terms for the exact grade.

Do not treat a market listing or a historical supplier record as confirmation of current stock. Request a written, date-specific quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Are POM homopolymer and copolymer grades identical?

No. They are distinct grade families. Compare exact manufacturer data and application requirements before selecting or substituting a grade.

Is a low-friction claim enough to select a POM grade?

No. Ask for the test method and conditions, and consider load, speed, counterface, temperature and lubrication in the actual application.

Can STOPWOO confirm a POM grade is in stock?

Only after checking the exact manufacturer, grade, quantity and requested shipment window with the relevant supplier.
